The opening chapter of Burrio Genius is shocking to say the least, and is a variety of ways. This cowboy author in jeans, hat, bolo tie, and buckle showed up at a conference full of teachers dressed as best as knew how. From the get-go, the author establishes his pride in his heritage and the need to believe in who you are. He is a non-conformist and has great reasons to be that way. Victor's life growing up was shaped significantly by his family and his experiences at school. His father taught him that everyone loved to be just like their family. But at school, students like him were beaten and shamed by teachers, administrators, and even other students attempting to conform. So when he was spontaneously asked to be a keynote speaker, they attempted to get him to conform to their idea of what a keynote should look like.
